The Sky Drops –or– “So I don’t bear the burden of being okay”

Sunday, 16 December 2007

I occasionally write and constantly say a lot of mean stuff about music and musicians today; from pop to country and jazz to classical. It’s not usually their fault, though. It’s the A&R people and the labels what’re killing music. The lack of a quality digital sales model is stalling any recovery.

There is, however, an underground brewing of artists who have twigged to the fact that with modern recording gear even a shoe-gazer duet can sound as good on “tape” as a fully produced 6-piece. The sensibilities involved are almost better by default.

The Sky Drops is one of those groups. Below is a particularly strong entry from them, “Now Would Be.” They didn’t lose any money letting me have this song for free. They have no record deal and we’re on opposite coasts. I couldn’t patronize them if I wanted. What they did gain was a fan and this publicity. If they ever do have a record deal, or they produce their own CD with another 10 songs of this quality, I’d buy it in a second.

[Side note to Apple and others: if you morons would release digital music at full 44-48kHz or 98kHz like you should, I’d be buying $100 of music monthly again instead of annually.]

The Sky Drops

Now Would Be

I got that picture you never gave to me
Twisted branches, a seashell crushed in the street
Dead birds don’t fly
Dead birds don’t fly

Black hole harbor a violet horizon gleams
See no sunlight but if I’m right I’m not here to make peace
No, you don’t know
No, you don’t know

Now would be a good time to be awake
Now would be a good time to be awake
Now would be a good time
Now would be a good time to be away
Away

Ship is sinking but I am sailing above
Every word, every day, every thing that crossed my mind
So I don’t hear the music, you move time and space
So I don’t bear the burden of being okay

Now would be a good time to be awake
Now would be a good time to be awake
Now would be a good time
Now would be a good time to be away
Away
Awake
