Letters to an underrated artist –or– The decomposing composer

Wednesday, 5 November 2008

Kids have a radio + CD player in their room. They get to pick their goodnight disc. Sometimes a story disc, sometimes music. I started a Mendelssohn disc they’ve been listening to for a few days.

Dad: Do you like music at bedtime?

5 year-old: Yes.

Dad: This was written by a man named Mendelssohn.

5 year-old: I like this music. We should write him a note: This is good music. Please write more music. It is very nice. Please send us more.

Dad: Well, that is really nice but he’s been dead for more than 100 years.

5 year-old: Oh. …Could we still write to him though?

Nice. What pieces? His songs? Or symphonies?

That post has a SWT tone. You're welcome.
