Update to Cougars & wolves…

Friday, 28 November 2008

I hate to say, “I told you so…” No, wait. I hate hearing it. I love saying it.

Fatalities from vehicle crashes with deer and other animals have more than doubled over the last 15 years, according to a new study by an auto insurance-funded highway safety group that cites urban sprawl overlapping into deer habitat.

The report by the Highway Loss Data Institute found that 223 people died in animal-vehicle crashes last year, up from 150 in 2000 and 101 in 1993.

Re: Update to Cougars & wolves…

One of the things I love about Wendell Berry is the tireless and always interesting way he proposes we have a serious discussion about our relationship with nature. It's a good idea. We have the quantitative data and empirically demonstrated outcomes needed to get started. But somehow I don't see it happening until long, long past the point where were we have no choice.

Hug a wolf (carefully, or better still, metaphorically). Save a life and reduce insurance premiums. What's not to like? I'd be somewhat more cautious about cougar-hugging -- cautious as in beaming good will from a respectful distance.
