Time.com: Eight Years After 9/11: Why Osama bin Laden is a Failure

FAIL magazine

Dear Time.com (again),

The cost of the “wars” we voluntarily launched to no positive effect has so far exceeded the cost of the damage done on September 11th, 2001 by a factor of 250 at least and continues to grow and will. World wide terrorism is dramatically increased. The United States—through its various vicious episodes and callous or outright lying responses—is not just known to the Muslim world as the home of stupid, violent, brutes and rapists but even to a much larger set of her own citizens.

If one man walked into DC and said, “Stack up two trillion dollars in a pile and burn it, and then execute 10,000 of your own citizens and cripple 30,000 more,” and we did exactly what he asked and let him walk away, do you think maybe that would still be described as failure? Because that’s essentially what happened.

Time.com, you guys are a bunch of fucking retards but I guess you’re just writing for your audience after all. We didn’t lose! Bin Laden did! And we could have won Vietnam, if the rest of you had only let us!

Re: Time.com: Eight Years After 9/11: Why Osama bin Laden is a Failure

In addition to the verifiable hard costs you list, Time is institutionally incapable of considering the real world opportunity costs of any given course of authoritarian policy. I've found this typical of the received wisdom industry and its audience.

What never fails to bewilder me is why a substantial part of the audience doesn't simply drift away. There's no serious penalty, there are plenty of rewards and there are dozens of vastly more interesting modes of processing the world around them. Some of them, goodness knows, are a bit daft, but they're not nearly as daft as a life spent half-drowned in toxic platitudes. If nothing else, boredom and basic human fidgets should be driving them away.
