Opera is to classical what show tunes are to jazz .
Which is to say operas are—excepting a few lyrical standouts and moments of pure musicianship like Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen—an abomination barely preferable to listening to a first year oboe student do scales.

of course that would also infer that Jazz i snothing more the a money grind marketed to a broad spectum audiance and -thus- hardly palettable to the ear.
