Because Americans—not all, but, to reuse the word again so soon, a plurality—are too quantitatively addled1 by generations of the exaggerations of media and marketing to even know how much distance a yard covers. What difference if one says meter instead?
Also because it’s funny when multi-hundred-million dollar climate research projects burn up around Mars.
