Seen on the road: “Minds are like parachutes… They only function when open!”

Sunday, 5 September 2010

This is a perfect metaphor actually, and accidentally. Parachutes only work when they are made of difficult to manufacture materials stitched carefully, packed tightly in a specific shape, left completely shut and free of moisture and dirt, and then opened at the right moment of which there is a distinctly finite set.

An open chute on the ground or in the plane will kill you, all but guaranteed.

Bromides sometimes stumble into a fortuitous perspicacity and wind up making a great deal of sense; much more than could be stuffed into the original bromidic intent, which plays out as the murder of experienced reason.

At a job "orientation" lecture I attended, one of the speakers declaimed (with fulsome and fatuous bluster) that he wanted us to take his most treasured bromide to heart. "Keep it stupid, simple." In context, it couldn't possibly be improved. He managed to make the elegant simplicity of the job, cabinetry, into one tortious botch after another. It's a stretch to call it murder, but depraved indifference? Yeah.

I'd like to think he met his end tangled in a parachute.

I'd argue the point on the bumper sticker...and I'd win...
